MIT Hobby Shop

UPDATE: WE RAISED $10K! Thank you to everyone who donated, we are really excited for this laser cutter! We are still accepting donations, because the more money we raise, the better laser we can purchase.

The Hobby Shop

The MIT Hobby Shop is a fully equipped wood and metal shop that teaches students the art of thoughtful design. It has been fostering MIT’s spirit of learning by doing for over 70 years by providing tools, training and assistance to all MIT students, faculty, staff and alums interested in turning their ideas into reality.

Impact

A laser cutter is one of fastest and easiest prototyping machines available.  It would give students and other Hobby Shop members the capability to cut and engrave plastics, paper, and wood. Functional projects like a miniature quad copters and ukuleles, or decorative items like papercraft models and intricate engravings are all made possible with the laser cutter.

What your support will do

The good news is that we are ready to impliment this laser cutter right away! We already have the filtration system in place (not a small acheivment) for this machine, so installing the laser cutter will be a smooth and easy process. Your support will allow the Hobby Shop to acquire a larger and more powerful 30X40 inch laser cutter, which will expand the possibilities of what students and other Hobby Shop members can create with this machine.
