TravlerPack Update: Further Distribution in Syria

February 26, 2019

Hi All,

I have exciting news to share. Since the end of this campaign in Dec 2017, TravlerPack has continued distributing TravlerPacks in Syria through our nonprofit partner, NuDay Syria. Most recently, we have begun another distribution in Syria which started about a week ago. In total, we now have 1,000 TravlerPacks in Syria.

Please see attached to this update a few pictures from our distribution team in Syria. Within the next few weeks, I will send over some more pictures of Syrians receiving our bags.

Feedback from Refugees in Syria

April 11, 2018

Hi Everyone, I hope this message finds you well! Our shipment of 600 TravlerPacks has been fully distributed in Syria by our nonprofit partner, NuDay Syria. We are currently interviewing refugees to gather feedback on TravlerPacks. We’ve learned that TravlerPacks have kept children warm, even on the coldest nights. We’ve also learned that refugees really like how small, portable, and easy to deploy TravlerPacks are. One improvement they suggested is making larger sizes for people who are injured.

So, what’s the future of TravlerPack? We will continue collecting feedback to improve the current design. As we do this, we are also working on a general fund to passively raise money to send additional TravlerPacks.

Simultaneously, we have realized that there are many other nonprofits doing amazing work in different sectors. We are currently partnering with an established nonprofit, Water Wells for Africa, to install a Afridev Hand Pump in Malawi, a small country in South Africa. Currently, children spend up to 3 hours a day walking to water sources that are often contaminated.  Often times, contaminated water prevents children from going to school. A clean, accessible source of water can change the lives of these children and villagers, serving up to 2,000 people at any given time for an average lifetime of 20+ years. It will allow children to go to school again and villagers to build a better future for themselves.

TravlerPacks in Syria

February 01, 2018

Hi Everyone,

I have amazing news to share. The first shipment of 250 TravlerPacks was just distributed in Idlib, Syria. TravlerPacks are being distributed to families that have lost everything and have been sleeping on the ground and sharing a few blankets. We have an additional shipment of 350 TravlerPacks currently enroute to Syria as well.

For those waiting on Perk Fullfilment, my team and I apologize for the delay. A few unanticipated circumstances came up with our manufacturing partner and we are doing our best to send your perk. Thank you again for all the support.

Campaign Finish!!

December 16, 2017

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to take this moment to thank you for your kindness and generosity. TravlerPack started last August as an idea scribbled on a napkin and has evolved into so much more in a little over the year. I still remember when my team and I sewed together the first prototype in my suite kitchen over IAP (I lived in Burton Conner last year). We had thrown the raw materials underneath my bed and stored the sewing machine in my closet.

Even after we had made the first prototype, we were not sure it would insulate as much as we hoped it would. Luckily, in January there was a snowstorm that rolled through Boston. It shut down the entire city and I figured it would be the perfect time to test the bag, so on one snowy night I tested it myself. I slept inside of TravlerPack Prototype 1 on the roof of my fraternity in 15F weather with snow beating down on the city. I have attached a picture of the morning after. The photo was taken right before I got out of the bag after sleeping in it overnight. As you can see, it did not stop snowing that night. I stayed very warm regardless and a thermometer thrown inside the bag revealed that the temperature inside hovered around room temperature throughout the night. From then on, my team and I were fueled to move forward with the project.

Fast forward nearly a year and we have raised $50,000+ in total ($34,000 on MIT Crowdfund and $17,888 on GoFundMe). With this money, we will be able to send a total of 1,000 TravlerPacks to refugees in the Middle East. We currently have 250 on the way to Syria. They are scheduled to reach resettlement areas in Mid January. As soon as I have pictures, I will share them through an additional update. From there, we plan to send additional shipments of 350 and then 400. Again, thank you so much for your generosity. None of this would be possible without you.
