Who can apply to use MIT Crowdfunding?
All registered students, organizations, competitive sport teams, full-time faculty, staff members, postdocs, development officers, schools, departments, labs, centers, and pretty much any other member of the MIT community that would like to raise funds for a project or initiative at MIT.
MIT Crowdfunding cannot be used to fund personal projects, endowment and capital projects, or projects that do not have (or cannot obtain) an MIT fund designation.
I’m eligible, and I have an MIT-affiliated project that I want to add to MIT Crowdfunding. Where do I start?
Check out the Get Started page to ensure you meet all the criteria for using the service. Please note, only a limited number of projects outside of the fall/spring semester timelines will be accepted. Most importantly, applicants are responsible for promoting their project to their network.
Why is the goal limit $20,000?
The most successful campaigns on MIT Crowdfunding set goals between $3,000 and $20,000. Campaign goals over $20,000 rarely make goal. Massive fundraising goals can potentially daunt prospective supporters.
I just applied. What’s next?
Please allow 7–10 days for your application to be reviewed. Your application will be reviewed by MIT Annual Giving staff, and other reviewers may include alumni and student volunteers. Approved campaigns will then be added to the schedule and an MIT Annual Giving staff member will follow up with the applicant.
How long does a campaign last?
While the active campaign time is typically about six weeks, the most successful campaigns are worked on for at least three months. We typically recommend that crowdfunding teams set aside 30-45 days to plan and prepare prior to launching a campaign. That gives a team time to plan, apply, be approved, promote their campaigns. At the end of a campaign, teams should plan to thank donors and provide updates on the impact of their gifts.
Is there a fee to use the platform?
There are no costs or fees associated with using the MIT Crowdfunding platform for groups and individuals affiliated with MIT, including students, alumni, and faculty.
What kind of campaigns are successful on MIT Crowdfunding?
Successful campaigns typically focused on improving a facet of the MIT community and are led by passionate, engaged teams looking to make a difference.
What if we don’t meet our goal?
If a project is not fully funded within the allotted timeframe, any funds raised will still be allocated to your listed fund designation. All funds, even without meeting the goal, should be spent to offset the cost of the project in question or utilized to the group’s best ability. Project teams should notify their donors and inform them how their donations will be spent.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology
P. O. Box 412926
Boston, MA 02241-2926
To send your gift via FedEx, UPS, or DHL please email recsec@mit.edu for address information. Note that there will be a delay in adding your contribution to the donor wall as your contribution must be manually processed after being delivered to our secure lockbox.

Does MIT or MIT Annual Giving take any part of my donation?
