Fun and Foiling at the MIT Sailing Pavilion
Summer months on campus are always more fun when students get a break in their studies and can mess around with some of the nontraditional toys on the south side of Memorial Drive. Our student leaders of the MITNA are totally intrigued by the fun and exhilarating rides available with foils.
Two years ago we jumped in with a moth foiling sailboat. The moth is an absolute gas and is often blasting along faster than the traffic on Storrow Drive. With generous support from alumni (who are also moth sailors) we have been able to inherit some very nice castaway equipment that still functions perfectly well. A UFO foiling catamaran was added in order to bring a training-wheels-style experience for newcomers, to learn the hows and whys of foiling.
Now we are ready to make the jump to foiling wings on a board. Foiling a board is actually much easier to learn than conventional windsurfing because the friction of the water goes away, and with less resistance, you have more speed with less arm fatigue. A rather large group of students is also anxious to try Fliteboarding. The Fliteboard is a rechargeable electric motor that props up a board, which you control aerobically while balancing to steer. Check out this video of a Fliteboard zooming around our old tech dinghies frostbiting in Marblehead harbor just before Christmas. How many would like to be solo sailing in a tech with a drifter OR blasting along silent and wakeless working on balance and steering with your weight?
Holding a foil while on a board with an underwater foil is the latest rage. It’s easy to learn, and boards and foils are all interchangeable. So different body sizes can get matched up with skill levels and breeze conditions. Foil winging is here to stay! Can you help us raise the first $10,000 that will get us closer to purchasing $30K worth of exciting, fun equipment at the always modern, warm, and friendly sailing pavilion?
About the MIT Sailing Program
Back in 1936, MIT Sailing was the inaugural sailing club of all colleges in North America. Yes, the MIT Sailing Program had sailing before the Naval Academy and the Coast Guard Academy. Today, we are very competitive year in and year out, and won the National Championship (Division 1) in 2018. Sailing is both a coed and a women’s two-season varsity sport at MIT, with walk-on participation strongly encouraged each year. We are exceptionally proud of the fact that almost 20 percent of all MIT students (grad and undergrad) learn how to sail while enrolled, and our recreational sailing program has always been free and open seven days a week from April through November.
Help us raise the first $10,000 of the $30K needed to purchase the following equipment:
- 4 wing sail boards of different sizes and 4 different wings
- 3 different underwater foils to adjust for skill levels and breeze
- 1 Fliteboard for zooming the Charles River
- Storage systems in the boat bays for safe and easy storage of the equipment
